Active Wellness
Active Wellness is a community-driven initiative designed to make fitness and wellness accessible to everyone in our neighbourhood. This programme specifically targets health inequalities in and around Levenshulme by offering free, informal exercise sessions tailored to the needs the different communities in our neighbourhood, in particular South Asian residents. Through Active Wellness, we aim to promote physical and mental well-being, foster community connections, and create a healthier, more inclusive Levenshulme.
South Asian communities in England face some of the most significant health challenges. While the reasons for this are complex, one common piece of feedback is that traditional fitness activities, such as running, cycling, and group exercise, are often seen as not being ‘for them.’
In response, we’ve partnered with a number of local schools to pilot a series of free weekly sessions aimed at parents and carers from South Asian families. These sessions focus on informal, accessible physical exercises tailored to their needs and preferences.
Our goal is to improve both physical and mental well-being for participants while fostering a healthier and happier community.
We are currently reaching out to local clubs and organisations who share our vision. If you specialise in running, football, cycling, or any other physical activity and want to support our community, we’d love to hear from you.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to We Love MCR and Sport England for their support in making this important work possible.
For Parents & Carers
Our weekly Active Wellness Yoga Sessions are designed to support your health and wellbeing through movement, breath, and mindfulness. Whether you’ve tried yoga before or are new to the mat, our sessions blend the ancient principles of yoga with a modern approach to health, helping you to feel strong, healthy, and to release stress and tension. All equipment is provided, and the practices are designed so that you can wear your everyday clothing as long as it is comfortable and loose fitting (you do not need expensive gym clothing).
If you’re a parent/carer with children at either Chapel Street Primary School or Alma Park Primary school and would like to take part in these sessions you can either speak to your school’s reception or speak with our facilitator Amanda.
