Active Wellness

Active Wellness is a community-driven initiative designed to make fitness and wellbeing accessible to everyone in our neighbourhood. The programme addresses health inequalities in and around Levenshulme by offering free, informal exercise sessions tailored to the needs of local communities – in particular South Asian women. Through Active Wellness, we aim to promote physical and mental wellbeing, build social connection, and create a healthier, more inclusive Levenshulme.

South Asian communities in England face some of the most significant health challenges. While the reasons for this are complex, one consistent theme is that traditional fitness activities – such as running, cycling or group exercise – can feel unwelcoming or inaccessible.

In response, we run a free weekly women-only yoga and movement session at Levenshulme Old Library, designed specifically for South Asian women in the area. The sessions are friendly, beginner-focused and culturally sensitive, supporting relaxation, strength and confidence.

Our goal is to improve physical and mental wellbeing for participants while fostering a stronger and more connected community.

We are always keen to hear from local organisations, schools and community groups who share our vision for a healthier Levenshulme and would like to collaborate on future activities.

We extend our thanks to Sport England and Manchester City Council for their support in making this work possible.

Weekly Community Yoga Sessions

Our weekly Active Wellness Community Yoga Sessions are designed to support health and wellbeing through movement, breath and mindfulness. Whether you’ve tried yoga before or are completely new to it, the sessions blend the ancient principles of yoga with a modern, accessible approach to health – helping you feel stronger, calmer and more confident in your body.

The sessions are free, women-only, and open to South Asian women in Levenshulme and the surrounding area. All equipment is provided, and you can wear comfortable everyday clothing – there’s no need for gym wear.

Sessions take place on Wednesday mornings during term time, 9.30 – 11.00, at Levenshulme Old Library, Cromwell Grove, M19 3QE.

The group is led by Amanda, an experienced yoga facilitator based in Levenshulme. The practices are gentle and beginner-friendly, focusing on relaxation, mobility and connection. (Please note: sessions are not suitable during pregnancy.)
